The Henri Marteau International Violin Competition is held every three years in the Haus Marteau International Music Meeting Center in Lichtenberg in the Hofer Land and in the Freiheitshalle in Hof .

The 7th Henri Marteau International Violin Competition - scheduled from April 26 to May 9, 2020 - has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The next competition is to take place in 2023.

Foundation, sponsorship and cooperation

The 125th birthday of the Franco-German violinist and composer Henri Marteau in 1999 inspired the Freundeskreis Haus Marteau eV to plan the violin competition and to hold it in 2002 and 2005. In 2007, the district of Upper Franconia took over the sponsorship of the competition under the leadership of District Assembly President Günther Denzler . Since then, the overall artistic and organizational management has been with the culture and education company Hofer Symphoniker . The competition has been a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions since 2012 .

Goals and funding program

The aim of the competition is to encourage young violinists up to 25 years of age on their way to a solo career and to make the name of Henri Marteau better known, who during his lifetime was particularly interested in promoting his students. The competition also enables the young musicians to get in touch with recognized professors and soloists.

Another feature of the competition is the subsequent sponsorship program, which includes concert engagements, scholarships for master classes and follow-up productions with Bayerischer Rundfunk . This is how the young artists become known to a wider public after the competition. For the winners of the competition, this can be an important step towards working as a solo artist.

Commissioned compositions

The competition has been awarding composition commissions for compulsory pieces since 2011. The following works have been created so far:

  • for 2011: Fazıl Say , Cleopatra op.34 for solo violin
  • for 2014: Steven Mackey , Repeated Notes for violin solo
  • for 2017: Søren Nils Eichberg , improvisation on a thought from Henri Marteau's Violin Concerto for solo violin
  • for 2020: Xiaogang Ye , Golden Hydrangea for violin solo

Admission: impartial jury

In the discussion about fair competitions, the International Violin Competition Henri Marteau decided in 2017 not to allow students from jury members to participate:

Students of jurors of the competition are not allowed to participate. A student is someone who has received lessons from a jury member between October 2019 and April 2020 or in the past for more than six months. Violinists who attend a master class with a jury member between January 2020 and April 2020 are also excluded from participating in the competition. "
