Giovanni Paolo Maggini

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giovanni Paolo Maggini (baptized on August 25, 1580 in Botticino near Brescia , † 1632 in Brescia) was an Italian violin maker .

Life

Maggini learned violin making from Gasparo da Salò (1549–1609). His early works show a clear influence by this master. His violas are particularly popular today because of their dark and sonorous tone. His instruments have a particularly high and full curve. His violins also sound pleasant, but are difficult to play because of their oversize. The instruments of his last years were increasingly influenced by Cremonese , which can be easily recognized by the more beautiful workmanship. Giovanni Paolo Maggini died of the plague in 1632 .

His violas and double basses are still being copied today.
