The Virtual University of Bavaria ( vhb ) is "the shared virtual campus" of the universities and colleges for applied sciences in Bavaria . As a joint institution of 31 sponsoring universities, the Bavarian universities and their teachers are supported in the challenges of digital change. For students, regardless of where they study or where they live, the professional, technical and didactic potential of the Bavarian universities in the field of online teaching should be made available. There are around 500 courses available to students, which can be studied online in addition to their face-to-face studies at one of the Bavarian universities. Since July 2019, the courses offered by the vhb have also been available to all non-enrolled people.

This concept is unique in Europe and a unique selling point for Bavaria as a university location.

goals and tasks

The aim of the vhb is to make learning independent of time and place through network-supported teaching and learning opportunities. At the same time, it supports its supporting universities in the design of contemporary, innovative teaching, in the challenges of a diverse student body and in the implementation of their internationalization strategies.

Target groups

The offer of the vhb is primarily aimed at students and teachers at Bavarian universities.

Students who are enrolled at a Bavarian university have the opportunity to use the entire range of vhb courses at no additional cost. The course offer is chargeable for other users.

The online courses offered are partly firmly anchored in the timetable or are taken for additional knowledge acquisition. Accordingly, events can be attended regardless of one's own major.

The offer of the vhb is also aimed at teachers who want to integrate virtual teaching and learning offers into their curriculum. The vhb financially supports the development and implementation of the courses and learning units.

Course offer

The vhb offers around 500 university courses from the following subject groups: humanities and cultural sciences, health sciences, computer science, engineering, teaching, medicine, natural sciences, law, key qualifications, social work, social sciences, languages, business informatics, economics and introductory courses. Complete distance learning courses are not offered.

In the 2016/2017 academic year there were 932 courses held, which were attended by 60,361 students.

Students can acquire a certificate of achievement for the courses. Every course is supervised online by trained "e-tutors".

Students at Bavarian universities can use all vhb courses free of charge , regardless of their field of study , and thus make their studies more flexible in terms of location and time. Other people who are interested in further academic training can take the courses for a fee of 40 euros per hour per week in the semester .

Supporting universities

The 31 sponsoring universities of the vhb include the nine state universities, the 17 state universities of applied sciences and five non-state universities and colleges in Bavaria.

European Social Fund (ESF) - funded training projects

Due to its expertise in the field of e-learning, the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art entrusted the vhb with project sponsorship for advanced training projects funded by the European Social Fund.

The network-based transfer of knowledge from universities to companies is promoted. Knowledge transfer and acquisition therefore take place primarily in online courses and are supplemented by face-to-face events ( blended learning ).
