Saint Lawrence Hill

The Lorenz Church in Hof an der Saale more pictures

The hill of St. Lorenz ( Lage ), together with the valley of today's parish that it dominates, denotes the oldest settlement center of Hof. The mule track, on which the first ford settlement developed, ran through the parish, which was to be assumed as a brook valley. Above this resting place and assigned to it, on the elevation of the Klausenberg, stood the castle of the Ministerials of Regnizi and the parish church of St. Lorenz, both attested for the first time in the 12th century. This topographically and historically significant place still offers a suggestive overall picture: the elevation against the rising Lorenzstrasse and the low-lying parish is supported by an embankment wall, along which a staircase runs; The Lorenz Church stands like on a plateau within the tree-lined, former Lorenz cemetery; on the slope, against Lorenzstrasse, stands the old schoolhouse, diagonally opposite the old parish (Inkurabel); the latter denotes the place where the court is presumed from which the city got its name. Ludwigstrasse, Klosterstrasse and Maxplatz

Ludwigstrasse in Hof an der Saale

The T-shaped juxtaposed Ludwigstrasse and Klosterstrasse ( Lage ) form, as wide streets, the spatial internal framework of Hofer Neustadt, which was planned by the Dukes of Andechs-Meranien next to an existing market settlement (old town) in the first half of the 13th century . The Neustadt is built on a mountain spur within a loop of the Saale. Ludwigstrasse, the backbone of the new foundation, follows the ridge of the mountain spur as a wide market street in a curve sloping from south to north; it used to lead from the Upper to the Lower Gate. The Klosterstrasse, which branches off to the west, is a blind extension that has never led to a city gate , and together with it forms a closed system of market streets, which can be regarded as typical of the old Bavarian Gothic city . The town hall is located at the junction of both streets . This street layout and the associated, narrow and deep parcelling were essentially retained when the city was rebuilt after the great fire of 1823. The houses that were mostly gable up until then and offset against one another in the bend in Ludwigstrasse were, however, rebuilt on the eaves side in line with classicism and in straightened lines. The new town houses, some of which stand over old foundations, illustrate the elegant restraint of Biedermeier design, which primarily works with harmonious proportions, emphasizes the surface and cube and only uses decorative motifs sparingly. The ensemble is unique in Bavaria in its closed, Biedermeier appearance (Wilhelminian style breaks only at Klosterstrasse 9 and Theaterstrasse 4). The junction of both streets was monumentalized during the reconstruction around 1825 by the architect Georg Erhard Saher: The front of the parish church, which had previously been hidden behind the eastern row of houses on Ludwigstraße, was exposed by demolition and staged as the final prospect of Klosterstraße; as a result, the church and town hall, also witnesses to the very first beginnings of the neo-Gothic , with their towers at this focal point of the city organism form a kind of “city crown”. - The eastern row of houses on Ludwigstrasse, erected directly above the Saale high bank, together with the hall choir of the parish church and the towers of the “city crown”, when viewed from the east, form an effective city silhouette. File number: E-4-64-000-2

Weißenburgstrasse and Liebigstrasse

The two streets that meet at an angle ( location ) are uniformly built with three-storey Art Nouveau apartment buildings. The development on Weißenburgstrasse was designed by the contractor and architect Jakob Brabek, that on Liebigstrasse by Emil Schrenk. The houses, livened up with bay windows and gable gables and partly decorated with bas-relief patterns, were built between 1906 and 1911. File number: E-4-64-000-4

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
