Ensembles
Ensemble of medieval and baroque city center Bayreuth
The ensemble ( location ) encompasses the town center around Maximilianstrasse to Kanzleistrasse within the former city wall, with its core mostly from the 16th / 17th century. Century, the east of the old town according to plan with Friedrichstrasse and Ludwigstrasse, mainly with buildings from the 18th century, as well as structural consolidations, redesigns and reconstructions from the 19th and 20th centuries. Bayreuth is a city founded the Dukes of Andechs-Meran from the mid-12th century. The Bavarian family, which built up a territory in the Obermaing area, created the new seat after the razing of their Altentrebgast castle. The new foundation took place in a topographically favorable location on an elevated ridge surrounded by three rivers (Roter Main , Mistelbach, Sendelbach), in the course of a connecting road from Bamberg to Bohemia . The older settlement, on which, as is often the case with founding processes in the High Middle Ages, the new city was based, was subsequently given the name Altenstadt. The layout of the founding city is based on the Bavarian street market scheme: on the northern edge of the plateau, the broad, crescent-shaped street market stretches along the trunk road, which originally led from the Lower Gate in the lowlands of the Mistelbach in the west to the Upper Gate in the east; from it go to the south side streets, which have opposite curvatures due to the terrain situation and meet each other, so that they form a rounded triangular figure overall; they surround the church district, which, according to the city type, turns away from the street market; the Meranier-Burg, which has been expanded into a city palace (old palace) since the 16th century, is built on a spur above the Main lowland and dominates the eastern exit of the street market. The parceling structure corresponds to the forms of the street layout: In the area of the southern side streets there is a small-scale property structure, while on both sides of the market narrow, deep courtyards are regularly strung together. There is a noticeable irregularity in the division in the area of Von-Römer-Straße, a circumstance that can be attributed to the fact that the Jewish quarter was not settled in this area along the western city wall until the 15th century. The development corresponds to the medieval plot structure, but the substance does not go beyond the early 17th century. Two major fires at the beginning of the 17th century caused a reconstruction in post-Gothic forms, which still defines the townscape today. In addition to gable buildings from this time, there are also eaves side buildings from the 18th century and sandstone block houses from around 1800. The market (Maximilianstraße) has a generous row of partly stately, often overformed town houses on the south side, the core from the 16th / 17th century. Century, while the historical buildings on the north side were severely decimated during the Second World War . Buildings from the reconstruction period, which refer to the regional characteristics of the pre-development, characterize the area north of the old castle today. The monumental focal points within this bourgeois townscape are the late and post-Gothic parish church, the old castle, a Renaissance complex with a uniform, baroque facade treatment, as well as the chancellery building, which essentially dates back to the 17th century. The courtly element, which determined the further development of the city since the transfer of the margravial-Hohenzollern court from Plassenburg to Bayreuth in 1604, caused a generous, baroque city expansion in the south-east of the medieval city in the 18th century . A racing track and the courtyard garden have been located on this level area, which is not interrupted by any river valley, since the 17th century. Courtly satellite satellite branches around Bayreuth had had a disruptive effect on the old, fortified city since the beginning of the 18th century: As a connection to Thiergarten Castle, Friedrichstrasse, designed according to a uniform plan, was laid out from 1730 on a still undeveloped area, the center of which was the rectangular Paradeplatz (Jean-Paul-Platz) is emphasized. The street is accompanied by sandstone block houses; the somewhat austere, bourgeois development is loosened up by a few courtly accents on the few, consistently simple aristocratic palaces; The architectural focus of the complex is the former orphanage, which dominates the central space. Of less regularity is the line of Ludwigstrasse, which leaves Paradeplatz and is shaped by the course of the city wall, and continues beyond Sternplatz in Opernstrasse in front of the Upper Gate. This area was designed from around 1740: A rectangular square was created above the old racetrack, which took on the character of a castle forecourt since 1753 when, as a result of the fire in the old castle, the courtyard moved into the houses on the court garden, which and conversions were converted into a residential palace. Opernstrasse, which curves gently from Sternplatz down into the valley of the Red Main, received its architectural accent in the facade of the Margravial Opera House. The baroque city of Bayreuth is unmistakably characterized by the characteristic sandstone construction in French-looking, classifying forms. The entire extension of the Hofgarten and the first section of the avenue (Jean-Paul-Strasse) that accompanies it on the south side, which stands out due to its baroque development, are added to the ensemble. File number: E-4-62-000-1.
Ensemble Bismarckstrasse / Erlanger Strasse
The ensemble ( location ) includes the older buildings preserved at the obtuse-angled confluence of Erlanger Straße and Bismarckstraße. It is a closed row of two-storey eaves summer houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, which forms a suburban island on this heavily modernized arterial road. File number: E-4-62-000-2.
Ensemble Cosima-Wagner-Strasse / Lisztstrasse
The ensemble ( location ) comprises part of an elegant residential area that was created in the area of the Wahnfried house on the northeast corner of the Hofgarten in the 1990s and the first decade of the 20th century. The development with single and semi-detached houses shows a variety of stylistic designs characteristic of late historicism. File number: E-4-62-000-3.
Ensemble of apartment block Opernstraße
City front ( location ) of a Wilhelminian style block largely rebuilt after the destruction of the Second World War. Four-storey, closed block, on the city side in its historicist form only the western corner house is preserved, the remaining parts of this front were rebuilt in a reduced historicism in 1948/50 by architect Eberhard Kellner. File number: E-4-62-000-4.
Ensemble Rathstrasse
Short street ( location ) of an urban development from 1880 to 1902, openly built with rental villas, the older still in post-classicist forms, the younger in rich historicism. File number: E-4-62-000-5.
Ensemble Sankt Georgen
Following his palace construction on the now no longer existing Brandenburg Lake, Georg Wilhelm laid out a settlement for new residents from 1702 ( location ). The existing new foundation developed along a street axis that ran parallel to the former palace park. It is framed by regular rows of hipped roof houses built according to a uniform type in sandstone blocks. The complex has remained intact in the large forms, but its original appearance has been severely affected by changes to the facade. A few pillar portals still exist between the houses. Brandenburger Strasse, an avenue rising from the south-east, whose south side is bordered by sandstone buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, is also part of it. At the seam and kink in St. Georgen, the obelisk fountain sets an accent. File number: E-4-62-000-6.
Ensemble August-Bebel-Platz, former settlement for disabled people
Former settlement of war victims from 1922 ( Lage ). Square with war memorial [ED according to Art. 1, Para. 2 BayDSchG]. Two-storey single-family duplexes and multi-family houses with hipped roofs and garden parcels. Plastered facades with wooden shutters, plastered ornamentation in forms of expressionism. Stepped gable at the apartment building August-Bebel-Platz 23-25 [ED according to Art. 1, Para. 2 BayDSchG] .. Architects: Hans Reissinger and Christian von Popp. File number: E-4-62-000-13.
City fortifications
The former city fortification dates from around 1300. It follows the edges of the valley spur on which the city is built and surrounds the medieval settlement. In the not naturally protected southeast section there was a neck ditch . The wall was strengthened in 1448, 1457 and 1665 (this outer ring is partially preserved), sold to the neighbors in 1754, who built over it. The only preserved former city tower is the so-called Schwertlesturm, von-Römer-Straße 4, 14./15. Century. The remaining parts are as follows:

Former ensembles
Ensemble Friedrichstrasse
The Friedrichstrasse , part of the baroque city expansion, was designed as a new addition, cross over the medieval city road train early 1730s and applied in a uniform progress until the 1760s into it. It opens and continues on Sophienstrasse to the south and consists of two halves of roughly the same length, in the middle of which the former Paradeplatz (now Jean-Paul-Platz) widens at the confluence of Ludwigstrasse. Her abrupt graduation in the south is due to the fact that after the work was stopped there was no longer any interest in further development. The historic and monumental core of the complex is the former orphanage that dominates the west side of the Paradeplatz. The northern half of the street was essentially built between 1735 and 1745. The parade square with the Catholic rectory and the riding hall was closed in 1745–50. The southern half of the street followed in the 1750s. The street, completely preserved in its original shape, is lined with two-story rows of houses in sandstone blocks, in which simple, lined-up houses alternate with free-standing, more sophisticatedly structured palaces. File number: E-4-62-000-7.
Ensemble Kanzleistraße
With its curved course, Kanzleistraße follows the outline of the medieval settlement. Despite its location on the edge of the city wall, it marks the spiritual focus of the city's founding, which dates back to the 12th century: the late Gothic city church is located there. The street leads from the market (Maximilianstrasse) to Sophienstrasse. At the mouths, the facade of the old castle on the one hand and the front of the gigold house on the other hand form final prospectuses. Its southern side is dominated by the monumental facade of the office building, adjoining the 17th century gabled houses, originally castle estates. On its north side, a few gable fronts from around 1800 are lined up in the east, while the building of the parish church has a decisive effect in the middle area. File number: E-4-62-000-8.
Ensemble Ludwigstrasse
Ludwigstrasse, which was laid out in the 18th century and part of the baroque city expansion, depicts an earlier structure of the area that was formerly outside the walled, medieval city. A racetrack has been located there since the 17th century, and the adjacent courtyard garden has existed since the 16th century. Under the direction of Joseph Saint-Pierre, the racetrack was converted into a square in the 1740s with the help of a uniform development, the center of which was to be the Reformed Church, which was connected by the new street with the Upper Gate and the emerging Friedrichstrasse . With the construction of the New Palace on the edge of the courtyard garden from 1753, the complex gained greater importance and the new square became the actual courtyard of the palace. The kinked course of the Ludwigstrasse reveals its position in front of the city wall. In the northern part there are some eaves side houses with a dwelling from the end of the 18th century. The forecourt is surrounded by a series of simple, two-storey sandstone blocks from the middle of the 18th century. The government building, designed as a counterpart to the palace in the Art Nouveau period, tries to adapt to the forms of the Bayreuth Baroque. File number: E-4-62-000-9.
Ensemble Maximilianstrasse
Maximilianstraße was used as a street market when the city was founded in the 12th and 13th centuries. Century created. It originally led from the Upper to the Lower Gate. The street widens to the northwest and gains plaza-like dimensions; at the bend to the former lower gate it narrows to a simple alley. As usual in the Bavarian street markets in Gothic times, the town hall was formerly free in the middle at the point of greatest width. The street is lined in the southern line with simple gabled houses, mostly 17th century, between which eaves side fronts from the 18th century and more representative facades appear. In the north row, the old palace with its high baroque structure and its open courtyard in the eastern part of the street set a monumental accent. The rest of the development is largely no longer original due to the destruction of the war. The facade of the hospital church from the middle of the 18th century, designed as the final prospectus, dominates the western bend in the street. Three fountains with figures from the 17th and 18th centuries are distributed over the area of the market. File number: E-4-62-000-10.
Ensemble Opernstrasse
The Opernstraße, which lies outside the medieval fortification ring and is part of the baroque city expansion, follows the course of the city wall in the area of the old castle. As a connection from the Upper Gate to the Main lowlands, it already existed in the Middle Ages. Its importance and monumentalization increased in the 18th century in the course of the urbanization of the area in front of the city in the south and east. The road bridges the height difference from the plateau on which the old town is built to the valley of the Main in a gentle swing. The eastern row of houses mostly consists of more sophisticated buildings from the 18th century. Its focus is the facade of the margravial opera house designed by Joseph Saint-Pierre. On the west side there are a few, simple houses, which are essentially in the 17th / 18th Century. The free space created for the opera driveway opposite the theater building makes the city wall and above the castle church visible. The monumental Wittelsbach Fountain was erected here in 1914. File number: E-4-62-000-11.
Von-Römer-Strasse ensemble
Von-Römer-Straße was laid out in the 15th century close to the city wall as a Judengasse. Its ghetto character is evident both in the eccentric location and in the crowding of the buildings. The curves in the course of the alley and the staggering of the poor-looking houses create a picturesque picture. The western row of houses, with remnants of the city wall on the back, is defined by a closed row of three-storey residential buildings from around 1800. In the eastern row, the gabled house No. 7 and the crooked house No. 15 set special accents. File number: E-4-62-000-12.

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
