Already before 1676 the property at Opernstrasse 6, Bayreuth, was acquired by the Köhler family, whose descendants still run the hotel today.

In the 17th century, these were the Metzger family Köhler, the ancestors of today's family Graf, who continue to operate in the coming generations for food stall was able to expand. In 1839 Wilhelm Köhler acquired the hospitality and shield justice "Zum Goldenen Anker". The name “L'Ancre d'Or” (golden anchor) originated from the original inn because of a figure with an anchor on the house. In the course of the connection of the city of Bayreuth to the railway network in 1853, Wilhelm Köhler applied for the license for the "wage grocery", i.e. H. for permission to drive his guests from the train station to the house and back. That was granted. Various conversions and extensions were made. Wilhelm Köhler became "Grand Ducal Hessian Court Supplier" and was accepted into the ranks of the city fathers. When it comes to technical innovations, the owners of the golden anchor were among the first to use them in Bayreuth. From 1895 at the latest, they had a telephone connection with the number 2. Electric light, central heating or private baths also soon found their way into the hotel.

In 1927 there was extensive renovation on the ground floor, especially in the interior. These were furnished with unique elements in the Art Deco style and have been preserved in the original to this day.

During the war years from 1939 to 1945, operations continued, especially during the festival. It was not until 1945 to 1949 that the hotel temporarily ceased its restaurant and hotel operations due to the occupation by the American army.
