Christ Church

The Christ Church in Bayreuth is on Wilhelmplatz between Goethestrasse and Nibelungenstrasse. It was inaugurated on May 6, 1956 and is a listed building .

history

The plans for a church building in this district go back to the end of the 19th century. In 1899 a church building association was founded and property was acquired. The plans were postponed during the First World War. The inflation destroyed the donations collected so far. In the last days of the Second World War, the district around Wilhelmsplatz was severely destroyed. The houses on the three plots on which the Christ Church with the rectory now stands were destroyed on April 5, 1945. The rubble plots were acquired and the architect Karl Pfeiffer-Haardt was commissioned to plan a church building and rectory. The foundation stone was laid on November 7, 1953 . In 1958, the separation was carried out by the parish St. Georgen .

Building description

Actually, this church should be called “Dreieinigkeitskirche”, since the number “three” recurs in many details of the building. Above all, the three spiers characterize the area between the Bayreuth city center and the Richard-Wagner-Festspielhaus . The floor plan of the church hall corresponds to a hexagonal central building . The high outer walls made of sandstone shield the interior from the street noise of the roundabout on Wilhelmsplatz. There are high-lying windows on two sides. There are extensions on the other four sides : the rectangular apse , above which is one of the three spiers; Opposite it is the structure for the community hall, flanked with the structure for the sacristy and organ loft, which carries a further spire, and with the structure for the club room and the side gallery, above which a spire also rises.

The church hall and parish hall are separated by a wooden folding door . If it is opened, around 150 additional seats are available for the service.

Furnishing

The altar consists of a sandstone slab on two blocks as feet, also made of sandstone. The latter are decorated with reliefs that symbolize Holy Communion . The left relief shows a pelican, an early Christian symbol, the right shows sheep and a shepherd's crook, which ends in the form of a host . The altar cross is forged in copper and gilded. The carved ebony body was added later. The four evangelists Matthew , Mark , Luke and John can be seen at the four ends of the cross . They each carry a scroll . Since the harvest festival in 1966 there has been a tapestry on the altar wall with the risen Christ in the center. He is enthroned on the rainbow above the globe. The design comes from Rudolf Yelin .

The pulpit is close to the pews . God's word should come close to people. It is decorated with an eagle, which according to early Christian tradition symbolizes Christ. The font in front of the steps to the chancel was created by Rolf Nida-Rümelin . The baptismal font ends with the cross on the globe. The Easter candlestick was presented to the parish for Easter 2002.

On the left wall of the nave hangs a cross with the title "Loss of the Middle". On four individual boards, fragments of a cross, two hands and two feet can be seen, each pierced with a plastic protruding nail. The figure in the middle of a crucifix is missing.

organ

The organ was built in two construction phases by the organ builder Friedrich Weigle . The swell mechanism with eight registers and one register for the pedal and console was put into operation on February 14, 1960 on the right side gallery. On May 3, 1964, the organ with main work , upper work and pedal work and now all sounding stops on the gallery opposite the altar was completed. Walter Supper designed the prospectus . In April 1988 a Zimbelstern was added to the organ. Below is the disposition :
