The Förmitztalsperre which Förmitzspeicher or Förmitzsee is a 1977 completed dam on the southern edge of the municipality of Schwarzenbach an der Saale in the Upper Franconian district of Hof . It is named after the Förmitz river of the same name , a right tributary of the Saxon Saale . The dam is located at the northern foot of the Waldstein range in the trough-shaped valley of the Förmitz. The builder and operator is the Free State of Bavaria .

use

The dam serves to raise the low water level in the Saxon Saale. Water retained in times of high flow (winter / spring) is added to the Saale in times of low flow, so that a guaranteed minimum water flow of approx. 1 m³ / s is guaranteed there at all times. To a limited extent, the dam is used for flood protection and the generation of electrical energy. The output of the hydropower plant , which was retrofitted in 1991 , consists of a cross- flow turbine with a flow rate of 0.8 m³ / s and an asynchronous generator , is 148  kW . This means that around 350,000 kWh of electricity are generated every year  from the water supplied to the Förmitz and Saxon Saale. The dam is also used for local recreation. Fishing, swimming, sailing, surfing and diving are possible on and on the lake. The water surface, the islands in the lake and the shore area provide habitat for native birds and migratory birds.

Main lock

The barrier structure is a stone embankment dam with a sealing core. The inner seal consists of a diaphragm wall made of earth concrete ( clay concrete ), which has a clay core on both sides and a support body made of rock and stone. The main storage facility has an area of 116 hectares and a storage volume of around 10 million cubic meters. The length and width of the reservoir are approx. 1.2 km. The main dam is 800 m long and 32.5 m high.

Pre-lock

At the inlet to the Förmitz there is a pre-dam with a length of around 800 m and a width of around 120 m, an area of 10 ha and a storage volume of 3.5 million cubic meters. The front dam is 160 m long, 12.5 m high above the valley floor (17.5 m above the foundation) and has a structural volume of 50,000 m³. It is also built as a rubble dam. It is paved in the middle and can be flooded over.

Feeding the lake

Since the inflow through the Förmitz alone is not enough to fill the reservoir, a 7.2 km long water overpass with a natural gradient was built from the neighboring Lamitz . The diversion structure is located near the district of Dörflas in the municipality of Kirchenlamitz , ( coordinates diversion structure ), the confluence in the northeast bay of the reservoir ( coordinates confluence ) at Förbau .

Others

A medieval ring wall is located near the dam at Förbau
