The Waldstein (view to the northeast)

The Waldstein is a northern mountain range of the Fichtelgebirge in Upper Franconia , Bavaria . In terms of nature , it belongs to the main unit of the Hohes Fichtelgebirge (394). Since September 2010 there has been a new design of the natural areas of northeast Bavaria, according to which the Waldstein range (including the Kornberg) is an independent unit.

geography

The highest point is the Great Waldstein (877 m). Starting in the west, there are still extracts on the mountain range: The Bärenhöhe (785 m) and the Bergkopf (857 m), then the Gratzberg (721 m), the Predigtberg (725 m) and the Reutberg (750 m), the Lehstenberg ( 768 m), the Vordere Mittelberg (682 m), the Schnittlein (747 m) and the Schindelberg (737 m), the Kreuzstein (695 m) and the Wechselbühl (695 m). Furthermore, the Epprechtstein (798 m), the Kleine Waldstein (829 m) and the ridge of the Hallersteiner Forest south of Hallerstein , the Hintere Mittelberg (666 m) and the Schiedarangen (666 m). In the east, the Kleine Kornberg (678 m) and the Reutbühl (610 m) form the transition to the Großer Kornberg .

topography

While in the west the mountain range at Gefrees runs out gently and in the valley pass between Schneeberg and Waldstein the Kornbach , which rises on Schneeberg and the state road 2180 from Weißenstadt to Gefrees, leave the Fichtelgebirge to the west, in the east in the valley pass between Waldstein and Kornberg the Lamitz , which rises at the mountain head, leaves together with the district road WUN 5 and the Weiden – Oberkotzau railway from Niederlamitz to Schwarzenbach an der Saale, the mountains to the north. In between are the mountain passes from Weißenstadt to Sparneck , from Kirchenlamitz to Weißdorf and from Kirchenlamitz to Schwarzenbach an der Saale to cross the mountain range.

In the eastern part, the Waldstein range roughly forms the language border between East Franconian and Bavarian dialect , as the settlement developed along the rivers Saale , Weißer Main , Eger and Fichtelnaab , which originate in the Fichtelgebirge . The name Waldsteiner chain for the entire northern flank of the Fichtelgebirge has been forgotten and is no longer used.

geology

Geologically , the mountain range consists essentially of granite . The story of its orogeny begins in the Precambrian about 750–800 million years ago - almost 20% of the earth's history , which only applies to a few of the rump mountains that still exist today .

Buildings

The Großer Waldstein transmitter is on the Großer Waldstein and the ruins of Epprechtstein Castle are on the Epprechtstein .
