Location and sights

Labyrinth at the foot of the Epprechtstein

The ascent takes place on the Nordweg (main hiking trail of the Fichtelgebirgsverein ) from Buchhaus. At the foot of the mountain, near the Buchhaus district of Kirchenlamitz , there has been a labyrinth of mighty granite blocks since 2009, built by the city of Kirchenlamitz.

Following the acquisition of Markgraftums Bayreuth by Prussia , the rulers, King visited Frederick William III. and Queen Luise , on June 21, 1805 the Epprechtstein with a large retinue. The stone table with stone benches, incorrectly referred to as the devil's table, was specially built for the taking of the midday meal. William III. is said to have received the message on the Epprechtstein that Napoleon I and his troops had crossed the Rhine.

The educational trail about mining on the Epprechtstein, the quarry path, begins at Buchhaus. It comprises several marked stations. You can see traces of mining in the form of quarries , tunnel entrances , remains of the miners' accommodation and equipment that was left behind. The path is part of the Bavaria-Bohemia Geopark .

Geotope

The Epprechtstein summit has been designated as a valuable geotope (geotope number: 479R009) and a natural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment .

On the treeless summit stands on an elongated, rugged sloping granite slab , the castle ruins Epprechtstein. It is the former tower-like main residential building, to which a staircase leads to the viewing platform. From there you have a panoramic view over the Waldstein range, to the Großer Kornberg , to Schwarzenbach an der Saale and Oberkotzau to Hof , south over the inner Fichtelgebirge to the Köseine . The service hut of the Kirchenlamitz mountain rescue service is 250 meters to the southeast.

In a deed of donation from Duke Otto II of Meranien, an "Eberhardus de Eckebretsteine" was first mentioned in a document in 1248. In 1308 King Heinrich VII enfeoffed the brothers Ulrich, Heinrich and Nickel, the sacks , with the fortress Epprechtstein, which von Wild became co-owners. In 1337, Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian enfeoffed Vogt Heinrich von Plauen with a small part of the fortress. In 1352 the burgraves of Nuremberg stormed the "robbery castle", after which they received it as a fief . In 1355/1356 they came into the entire possession of the castle, the office and Kirchenlamitz through purchase. The castle tower was part of the maintenance regulations of 1498 . 200 years later the castle was destroyed by the troops of Vogts Heinrich von Plauen and fell into disrepair.
