The locomotives of the E 17 series (called DB series 117 from 1968 ) were electric locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) , which were procured for express train traffic at the end of the 1920s .

Pre-war period

In 1927, the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft, building on the good test results with the E 21.0 series , ordered 33 E 17 series electric locomotives with a top speed of 120 km / h for the medium-duty express train service . A year later the order was increased to 38 vehicles. They were the first express locomotives with a 1'Do1 'wheel arrangement. The AEG and SSW , which is suitable for delivery Community WASSEG merged, provided the electrical equipment of the vehicles, which were delivered in 1928 and the 1929th

The E 17 01 to 18 were intended for the southern German network and were put into operation at the Munich main station .

The E 17 101 to 112 were intended for the central German network, of which the E 17 101–106 and 112 were delivered directly to the Leipzig West depot, while the E 17 107–111 went to Munich in the spring and summer of 1929, probably around there to be used for the special trains as part of the Oberammergau Passion Play. They were only transferred to Leipzig in December 1929. The Central German locomotives were handed over to Stuttgart and Ulm in 1933 and replaced by newly delivered locomotives of the E 04 series .

The E 17 113 to 120 were intended for use in the Silesian network, of which the E 17 120 also first came to Munich, only to help out there again in the summer of 1930 together with the E 17 113 when two E 16s were in Silesia for test purposes . Finally, the E 17 15–18 were moved to Silesia between 1931 and 1935 and were given the new numbers E 17 121 to 124.

post war period

Most of the E 17s from Silesia were transferred to Augsburg and Munich in 1945 due to the war. The E 17 117 and 119 remained in Silesia due to war damage, the E 17 123 and 124 came together with the E 17 10 and 101 in the Raw Dessau into the Soviet-occupied zone. In 1946 the E 17 123 and 124 were driven to the USSR. They returned without being deployed there in 1952. During the processing in the Raw Dessau there was an exchange of the company numbers. The E 17 117 was still in Warsaw in 1954, the E 17 119 in the former RAW Lauban, now ZNTK Luban of the PKP. The E 17 10 remained in the USSR, the E 17 101 remained in the Raw Dessau in 1946 and was rebuilt in the early 1960s with parts of the E 17 123 that had an accident in Leipzig in 1960 as the E 17 123 II (number assignment in the second occupation).

After the Second World War , 26 locomotives were still in use on the Deutsche Bundesbahn and two of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The two DR machines were retired in 1968 and then scrapped.

At the DB, the locomotives were modernized in 1960/61; the E 17 110 received new fronts with only two driver's cab windows each. In 1968, all of the 26 remaining locomotives were renamed class 117 . The depot for the 117 series was the Augsburg depot , from where the locomotives were used on the routes to Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart. The turning stations in the Stuttgart district were Heilbronn and Böblingen. The last 117 (117 106) was retired on April 24, 1980.

The former Silesian E 17 113 has been preserved. It belongs to the DGEG and can be viewed in the Neustadt / Weinstrasse Railway Museum. The E 17 103 is also preserved, it is housed in the Lichtenfels railway depot.

Locomotive data

The locomotives with the 1'Do1 ' wheel arrangement weighed 111.7  t and were 15,950  mm long. The power transmission was done by AEG Kleinow spring pot drives . The starting tractive effort was 235  kN , with an hourly output of 2800  kW . The machines could move 630-t trains horizontally at 95 km / h, at a gradient of 10 per thousand at 72 km / h and at 20 per thousand at 54 km / h. The E 17 series locomotives, like all pre-war electric locomotives with the exception of the E 18 and 19 series, were operated standing up. The locomotives had two SBS 9 pantographs.
