The Untreusee is a reservoir in the south of the city of Hof in Bavaria. The lake is mainly used for tourism and local recreation. The flood protection in winter and the low water increase in autumn for the Saale play a minor role. The operator is the city of Hof. The Untreusee gets its name from the Untreubach that feeds it.

History and naming

Construction of the barrier wall began in April 1976 and the topping-out ceremony was held in June 1978. The official name of the dam is Talsperre Oelsnitz (Ölschnitz, Slavic Erlenbach, forest area Ölsch).

The name Untreusee was proposed by the then mayor Hans Heun and approved by a majority of the council members of the city of Hof.

The lake receives most of its water from Untreubach (or Oelsnitz). The valley is therefore also popularly called Untreutal. In the upper reaches of the stream flows through a forest between Almbranz, Ahornberg and Konradsreuth, which has been known as Untreu since the Middle Ages. This naming is speculatively attributed to the fact that the forest formed the border between the Franconian Radenzgau and the Regnitzland and crossing this border was infidelity to the sovereign.

Reservoir

dam

As part of the border region policy and as a counterpart to the new construction of the dam of the Weißenstädter See , plans for a similar recreational lake near the town of Hof were taken up. The project was originally planned for the purpose of raising the low water level of the Saale , which the storage facility also fulfills as a secondary task, but the 120 hectare Förmitztalsperre , which is twice as large and serves purely water management purposes, namely filling the low water level , was built for this purpose . At the same time, the Saale water should be diluted in the summer months due to the heavy pollution with industrial waste water.

The dam on the Untreubach was created from 1976 and completed within five years. The dam was planned and built as an Ölsnitz dam. The lake is around two kilometers long and 700 meters wide and has a maximum water depth of 15 meters. In normal traffic jams, it takes up an area of 0.6 square kilometers, which corresponds to about 84 soccer fields. Several streams are dammed in the valley of the Ölsnitz. The overflow of the lake flows into the Saale as Ölsnitz just under a kilometer behind the dam between the Hof district of Moschendorf and Döhlau . The dam is designed as an earth dam. The flood relief has a fixed crest overflow, over which a bridge leads. The pre-barrier is a biotope .
