Dialect group

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dialect group is a collective term for related dialects . They are mostly spoken in a fairly closely related regional area. From a linguistic point of view , the dialect group stands between the more comprehensive terms “ language ” and “ dialect cluster ” on the one hand and the more specific term “dialect” on the other.

requirements

So that two or more dialects can be combined into a dialect group, objective and subjective conditions are required. In the objective sense, the dialects must be linguistically related to one another; In the subjective sense, extensive mutual intelligibility is required, that is, the dialects must be understood by the speakers themselves as varieties of a “common language”.

The West Palatinate and Front Palatinate dialect groups , which represent the two major groups of Palatinate , may serve as an example . Although the dialects summarized in them differ more or less clearly for dialect speakers, they are nonetheless mutually understood without any problems. On the other hand, there are sometimes serious differences between the West Palatinate and West Palatinate dialects. They not only affect the pronunciation, but also come into play in grammatical peculiarities and in the choice of words and are therefore sometimes even heard by those unfamiliar with the dialect.
