Ernst Dietlein (born June 6, 1884 in Zeil am Main , † January 7, 1954 in Hof ) was a German Protestant theologian , archivist and local history researcher .

Life

Dietlein in 1921 at the University of Erlangen with a thesis on the history of the Hofer textile industry for Dr. phil. PhD. From 1927 he worked in Hof as a religion teacher and honorary pastor, and from 1931 also as the first director of the city archives he founded.

Dietlein found the way to so-called national renewal through local research. He put his hope in National Socialism . At the rally that took place in Hof on May 1, 1933 on Labor Day , he gave a “robust National Socialist speech” in which he paid tribute to “Providence that sent us the Führer”. On November 8, 1935, Dietlein gave a “fiery speech” and “wild tirade of agitation against political opponents” when a memorial plaque was placed on the house where Ernst Pöhner was born on the 10th anniversary of his death. From 1936 he stayed with the Confessing Church out of opposition to the National Socialist church policy , but continued to show himself as a staunch National Socialist in his publications until the war years.

Dietlein is regarded as the “prototype of a National Socialist 'fighter' on the 'home front'”. He was "a staunch National Socialist until the end of the regime"

During the denazification , Dietlein received a " Persilschein " from the church , so that in 1948 he was reinstated in his office as city archivist. He held it until his death.

Public appreciation

In 1964, on the tenth anniversary of his death, a street in Hof was named after Dietlein. A first application for renaming was rejected by the city council on June 28, 2013. After a lengthy public discussion, the city council finally decided on November 29, 2013 that Dr.-Dietlein-Strasse should be called Dr.-Bonhoeffer-Strasse in future.
