Robert Weaver

Robert Weaver (born December 29, 1958 in Rochester ) is a retired American wrestler . He was a 1984 free style paper weight Olympic champion .

Career

Bobby Weaver grew up in Blairstown , New Jersey , and attended Blair Academy, a private high school in Blairstown Township. There he came with the wrestling too. He then attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania . Here he developed into an excellent freestyle wrestler who was several times "EIWA" champion in paper weight. EIWA is an association of universities on the east coast of the United States. At the NCAA Championships (US Student Championship) he reached 2nd place in 1982 in paper weight. Robert Weaver was a very light wrestler who started his career almost exclusively in paper weight, which had a weight limit of 48 kg.

He was more successful at the US Championships (AAU Championships), because here he won the championship title for the first time in 1978, which he followed by several. He made his debut on the international wrestling mat at the 1977 Junior World Championship in Las Vegas . There he was vice world champion in paper weight behind the Soviet athlete Kasabiev. In 1979 he was runner-up in the Seniors World Championship in San Diego . He suffered a defeat after four victorious fights in the final against defending champion Sergei Kornilajew from the Soviet Union .

In 1980 he was unable to take part in the Moscow Olympics because the United States boycotted those games. In the fall of that year, he won the paper weight competition at the World Cup in Toledo (Ohio) , defeating the 1972 Olympic champion Roman Dmitriev from the USSR.

At the World Cup in Toledo (Ohio) in 1981, he again had to admit defeat to Sergei Kornilajew in paper weight. For the next use at an international championship, Bobby Weaver came back in 1983 at the world championship in Kiev . But he missed the final there and reached 5th place.

In 1984 he was a member of the US team at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . There he seized the opportunity and became an Olympic champion in paper weight . Three victorious fights against Reiner Heugabel , FRG , Gao Wenhe, China and Takashi Irie , Japan were enough for him .

After this Olympic victory, he ended his wrestling career. He was then a wrestling coach at Easton High School in Easton , Pennsylvania for 15 years . Now he works in Easton in charitable programs of various organizations such as "United Way", "Big Brother / Big Sister" and "Easton PAL".
