Alexis Vila
Alexis Vila Perdomo (born March 12, 1971 in Vila Clara ) is a former Cuban wrestler and current mixed martial arts fighter. As a wrestler, he was twice world champion and won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in free style in light flyweight .
Career
Alexis Vila grew up in his hometown and started wrestling there as a teenager in 1986. He focused on the free style and started for a wrestling club in Vila Clara, where Juan Caballero was his trainer.
He first appeared on the international wrestling mat in 1993, when he was already 22 years old. He started at a World Cup tournament in Chattanooga and finished second behind the Russian Peter Jumschanow . A few months later he took part in the 1993 World Cup in Toronto , where he immediately won the world title ahead of Wugar Orudschow , Belarus , Jung Soon-won , South Korea and Ilyas Sükrüoglu , Turkey .
In 1994 he was also the Pan American champion in Mexico City ahead of Jose Manuel Restrepo Gonzales from Colombia and Kanamti Solomon from the United States . In August 1994 he succeeded in defending the world championship title first won in 1993 in Istanbul . He won in Istanbul ahead of Jung Soon-won, Peter Jumschanow and Assen Tschetow from Bulgaria .
In 1995, Alexis Vila was the winner of the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata . He relegated Paul Ragusa from Canada , Tim Vanni from the United States and Jose Manuel Restrepo Gonzales to their places. But he was unable to achieve his goal of becoming world champion for the third time in a row in Atlanta . He lost in Atlanta in the final against his old rival Wugar Orudschow and therefore had to be content with second place in front of Armen Mkrtchjan from Armenia and Nader Rahmati from Iran .
In 1996 he qualified for the Olympic Games in Atlanta by winning a tournament in Cali / Colombia . In May 1996, he also launched the Grand Prix of Germany in Leipzig and won there before Wugar Orudschow, Romica Rasovan , Germany (formerly Romania) and Beyhan Gülfiliz from Turkey. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, he defeated Isaac Jacob, Nigeria and Filiberto Fernandez, Mexico , then lost to Armen Mkrtchyan and won an Olympic bronze medal with victories over Wiktor Efteni , Ukraine, Vitali Railean , Moldova and Wugar Orudschow.
In May 1997 Alexis Vila took part in the Pan American Championships in San Juan / Puerto Rico . He won there ahead of Eric Albarrion, United States, and Ulises Valentini, Dominican Republic . After the award ceremony, he took advantage of the opportunity to break away from the Cuban team and then emigrated to the United States.
Stay in the United States
In the United States, Alexis Vila first lived in North Carolina and Michigan and then found a home in Miami , Florida . There he became a criminal offender and had to serve a four-year prison sentence. He then found a job as a youth coach for wrestling and other martial arts with a charity in Miami.
In 2007 he made his debut as a mixed martial arts fighter and has competed in this sport for the American Top Team to date 13 fights, of which he has won eleven.
