The company was founded in 1923 by Merritt J. Osborn as the Evaporato Company and shortly thereafter renamed Economics Laboratory Inc. (EL) based in St. Paul , Minnesota . In the 1930s, the dishwashing detergent product Soilax became particularly popular. After the company's founder died in 1960, his son Edward Bartley Osborn († 1978) took over the company.

In 1961, the manufacturer of products for the agriculture and food industry, Klenzade Products Inc. from Beloit, Wisconsin, was acquired, which became known for its cleaning-in-place process for dishwashers. In 1964, the sanitary service provider Magnus Chemical Co. Inc., from Garwood, New Jersey, is taken over. In the 1970s, the product finish became particularly well known. In 1978 Fred Lanners took over the management and after his resignation in 1983 Pierson M. (Sandy) Grieve.

In 1991 the company entered into a joint venture for Europe with the German Henkel group. In 1995 Klenzade was incorporated into the Ecolabs Food & Beverage Division.

In 2007, the manufacturer of infection control and fluid control products, such as disposable devices and surgical accessories, Microtek Medical Holdings Inc. In 2006, Microtek still had disposable surgical products manufacturer KMMS Holdings, Ltd. and its European manufacturing and distribution facilities (collectively referred to as Samco).
