Hans Barwitzius (born December 4, 1914 in Wiener Neustadt ; † December 19, 2005 ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and mayor of Wiener Neustadt.

Life

In 1913 , Hans Barwitzius senior, born in Sopron in 1885, moved from Sopron to Wiener Neustadt, where he was able to work at the Daimler factory . His son of the same name was born in 1914 at Kaiserbrunngasse 5 in a one-room kitchen apartment, still without electricity and gas with petroleum lighting, in an apartment building . In a building with an upper floor that is open on all sides under a gable roof on Kaiserbrunngasse 3, the so-called Hängstatt , you could hang the laundry to dry for a fee. Before that, after washing, the laundry was taken around the corner to Wiener Strasse, to the Schwabbank, and washed up. Hans Barwitzius senior was significantly involved in the January strike in 1918, was later elected chairman of the works council of the Daimler works and was municipal councilor in Wiener Neustadt until 1934.

Hans Barwitzius junior initially worked as a commercial clerk and then became a district secretary at the trade union federation . A member of the SPÖ since his youth, he became municipal councilor in Wiener Neustadt in 1955, and in 1960 deputy mayor. On September 24, 1965, the municipal council of Wiener Neustadt elected the First Vice Mayor, Hans Barwitzius, to succeed Rudolf Wehrl , who died on August 31, 1965 after a 20-year term in office. In his inaugural address, Hans Barwitzius named the promotion of the settlement of industrial companies and the preservation of existing companies in the city as a goal, and the entire municipal council should use all its energy for the Raxwerk . Hans Barwitzius was mayor until 1984, when he was made an honorary citizen of the city in the same year.
