The SpVgg Gräfrath (officially: 1. Sportvereinigung Solingen-Gräfrath 03 eV ) was a sports club from Solingen . The first soccer team played for nine years in the highest amateur league in the Lower Rhine region.

history

The association was created in 1925 through the merger of BC Gräfrath 03, founded in 1903, and FV Solingen 04 , which was created a year later . The more successful parent club was the BC Graefrath 03, which was on the ball in the seasons 1908/09 and 1910/11 in the top division of the time. After the merger in 1926, the company was promoted to the first-class first district class Berg / Mark . There the team managed to stay in the league in 1929 only thanks to a league increase before the Graefathers had to relegate three years later.

After the end of the war , Solingen initially played in the district class and, after a 1-0 play-off victory over SV Wanheim, made it to the state league, the highest amateur league at the time on the Lower Rhine. In a curious way, the club was deprived of its greatest success in 1953. In terms of sport, the team was first runner-up behind local rivals Union Ohligs . The Ohligser therefore took part in the Lower Rhine Championship with the masters of the other two national league relays. Then it turned out that the Union had used an ineligible player in two games, whereupon three points were deducted and the Graefathers subsequently became champions.

In 1956, the team qualified as fourth for the newly created Association League Niederrhein , from which they promptly had to relegate as bottom of the table . In 1959 it even went back to the district class before being promoted back to the state league in 1968. There, the Graefathers were immediately runner-up behind Union Ohligs, before they returned to the Association League Niederrhein in the following season 1969/70 after a decider win against the amateurs of Fortuna Düsseldorf . After only one year the relegation followed, which in 1977 was relegated to the district league and a year later to the district league A. After two short district league guest games in the 1980s, the Graefathers only played at district level in the following time.

On May 12, 2006, SpVgg Gräfrath merged with VfL Wald to form 1. SpVgg Solingen-Wald . Merger partner VfL Wald should not be confused with VfL Solingen-Wald , which merged with OSC Solingen on July 24, 1974 to form SG Union Solingen .
