Trivia

  • Şaş tested positive for the doping agent ephedrine in a doping test in February 1999 . It turned out that Şaş had taken the drug A-Ferin after a flu-like infection and therefore tested positive. The Turkish Football Association then imposed a six-month ban on Şaş.
  • Şaş is known for regularly entertaining the Turkish media with stories about his fear of flying in a humorous way. In 2010 he told a program on Saba Tümer that there was turbulence on the outbound flight to South Korea during the 2002 World Cup . Şaş was scared to death and watched his teammate Hakan Şükür as he said several prayers. Since Şaş did not know too many prayers, he said aloud that he would like to join Şükür's prayers and hopes to be protected as well. On a one-way flight to the Turkish city of Van , Şaş was allowed to sit in the cockpit and passed out when one of the pilots asked the other if he could not see the runway either. On the way to an away game in Romania there was again turbulence. Şaş sat hand in hand in the corner with a flight attendant , who was also frightened, while the two men comforted each other crying. If possible, Şaş said he drove to away games by car and covered almost 20,000 km. In this way, many service station operators got to know him personally.
