IWBF Champions Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The IWBF Champions Cup is an international competition for wheelchair basketball club teams organized by the European section of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF Europe). The most successful team is the German team RSV Lahn-Dill from Wetzlar with six titles.

history

The competition was held regularly for the first time in 1976. This is the oldest club competition of this sport in Europe. It was started the year before by Hans Tukker, the coach of the Dutch club SC Antilope, and initially ran under the name WEWBT ( West European Wheelchair Basketball Tournament ). Together with Willi Brinkmann from the BSG Duisburg-Buchholz, Tukker formed the organizing committee of the competition.

Until 1982 the competition was held in two divisions. Then the committee decided to introduce a division as well as preliminary rounds and a final round instead. The number of teams has also been reduced. In May 1983 the ISMGF (International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation) recognized the WEWBT as the official European championship for club teams. In the same year the competition was renamed the EuroCup , and in 1988 it was finally renamed the Champions Cup .

Up until the turn of the millennium, Dutch clubs dominated the cup. The BC Verkerk alone won five times between 1991 and 1996, setting a record that RSV Lahn Dill could only catch in 2012. A total of 16 victories were achieved by Dutch clubs, followed by France (6), Germany (6) and Turkey (5).
