Albert Riera Ortega (born April 15, 1982 in Manacor ) is a former Spanish football player and current coach .
society
Riera, who plays in left midfield, started his career with his hometown club RCD Mallorca , from whose youth he came. After three years and a grand finale (winning the Copa del Rey in 2003), he went abroad. He spent the next two years as a regular in the French Ligue 1 for the ambitious team of Girondins Bordeaux . He really wanted to go back to Spain, but from Bordeaux he only managed to jump back into the Primera División at the second attempt . After a weak first half of the season, he was loaned to Manchester City in the English Premier League in 2006 . City rivals and archenemy Manchester United were defeated on his debut . At the end of the season, however, the "Citizens" decided against a commitment.
Against all odds, Riera prevailed at Espanyol during the 2006/07 season and became a regular. In the final defeat in the UEFA Cup against Sevilla FC , he even scored a goal in regular time.
On September 1, 2008, just before the end of the transfer period, Riera signed a four-year contract with the English Premier League club Liverpool . The transfer fee is estimated at eight million pounds (around 9.8 million euros).
Riera made his debut for Liverpool on September 13 in the home game against Manchester United . Three days later, at Olympique Marseille , he played in the UEFA Champions League for the first time . After the 2008/09 season was relatively successful for Riera with reaching second place in the Premier League, he was repeatedly thrown back in the 2009/10 season by several injuries. After he publicly criticized Rafael Benítez , rumors of change were often heard in the media.
In July 2010, the midfielder signed a four-year contract with the Greek first division club Olympiacos Piraeus . In the 2010/11 season he won a championship with Olympiacos for the first time in his career.
On September 3, 2011 Riera moved to Turkey to Galatasaray Istanbul . Galatasaray paid a transfer fee of 3 million euros for the Spaniard. Here he fell short of expectations in the first season and was therefore heavily criticized by the Turkish trade press. After his departure was almost certain in the summer of 2012, he stayed in the team for the coming season. In his second season at Galatasaray, Riera was used by head coach Fatih Terim as left full-back after the actual left-back Hakan Balta was injured and his replacement Çağlar Birinci failed to perform as expected . In this new position, Riera consistently convinced and established himself as a regular player. With the 2013/14 season, the number of foreigners in the Turkish Süper Lig was severely restricted. Due to this rule change, Riera hardly played too few appearances in the league and rather played in the Champions League or in the Turkish Cup. After Galatasaray had strengthened itself in the winter transfer period 2013/14 according to the wishes of the new head coach Roberto Mancini with Alex Telles and Izet Hajrović , two foreign players had to be given up. Riera's contract was terminated by mutual agreement on January 29, 2014. During his time at Galatasaray, Riera was twice Turkish champion, Turkish Supercup winner and once quarter-finalist of the Champions League.
On March 24, 2014, he announced that he would play for the Italian first division club Udinese Calcio from summer 2014 . In November 2014 he was terminated without notice after taking part in a poker tournament although Udinese played a league game against Chievo Verona . In March 2015 he found a new club in RCD Mallorca . In September 2015 Riera moved to the Slovenian first division club NK Zavrč . After twelve league games and one goal, he moved to FC Koper in January 2016 . By the end of the season he was only used for 28 minutes when he came on against NK Olimpija Ljubljana on February 28 . In July 2016 she was released.
On January 24, 2018, he finally announced the end of his career.
Coaching career
At the beginning of the 2020/21 season, Albert Riera became Fatih Terim's assistant coach at Galatasaray Istanbul .
National team
Of course, the Spanish national coach Luis Aragonés did not miss Rieras' performance improvement, so that he has now played three games for the " Selección ". In the away game in Denmark he even managed a long-distance goal to make it 3-1. His teammate Raúl Tamudo also scored in the same game. However, he was not allowed to take part in the 2008 European Football Championship.
