Mehmet Reha Eken (born January 1, 1925 in Istanbul ; † August 19, 2013 ) was a Turkish football player , coach and official. Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he was strongly associated with this club. On fan and club pages he is seen as one of the most important players in club history. In his four appearances for the Turkish national team , he scored six goals and, according to the list of Turkish national soccer players , has the best goal / game ratio of all Turkish national players with 1.5. His two brothers Danyal Vuran and Bülent Eken were also active as players at Galatasaray, the latter, like Reha Eken, being one of the club's legends.

Player career

society

Eken attended the renowned Galatasaray High School and played here in the youth department of the traditional Galatasaray Istanbul club - the club that was founded by students from the Galatasaray High School. In 1944 he was accepted into the professional squad at Galatasaray Istanbul, which also started his professional football career. His older brothers Danyal Vuran and Bülent Eken played for Galatasaray in the 1930s and 1940s, which is why Eken started his career with this club. While Danyal no longer played Reha Ekens at Galatasaray when he started his career, Bülent was still active. Both played together for Galatasaray for the next twelve years, while Bülent played football for a short time in Italy in the 1950s. At the time of his involvement in the professional squad there was no international professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which the İstanbul Futbol Ligi (German: Istanbul Football League ) was considered the most renowned. In addition, from 1936 an attempt was made to establish a kind of national championship with the Türkiye Maarif Mükafatı , a national football league of Turkey designed as a tournament and held at irregular intervals. Eken made his debut for Galatasaray during the game in the Istanbul Football League on September 24, 1944 against Suleymaniye SK . In this game, Eken also scored two goals. By the end of the season on March 3, 1945, Eken had 16 games for his team and scored nine times. After the end of the season Galatasaray took part in the Türkiye Milli Eğitim Kupası (German: Cup of the Ministry of Education of Turkey ). Eken was used in almost all encounters during this tournament and finished the tournament with his team in 3rd place.

After this first year, Eken was almost always used in the Istanbul Football League. After he had played regularly in the seasons 1945/46 and 1946/47, he did not complete a single game for his team in the season 1947/48.

It was not until the 1948/49 season that he began to play for his team again. In this season, Eken and his team reached the championship of the Istanbul Football League and thus the first title win and only title win of his playing career. With eleven goals this season, Eken was the most successful shooter on his team and thus had a large share in the championship win. Through his season performances, the then Turkish national coach, the Hungarian Ignác Molnár , noticed him and nominated him for the national team. After this successful season, Eken did not play any more games until the spring of 1950. It was not until the spring that he played in the Türkiye Milli Eğitim Kupası (German: Cup of National Education ) for his team again and scored nine goals during this tournament. Also the following season 1950/51 he completed only four league games over the entire season.

In the summer of 1951/52 the İstanbul Futbol Ligi was transferred to the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ) and all well-known clubs took part in this league from then on. In the first season of this league, Galatasaray reached the runner-up behind arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . Eken appeared in nine games and scored three goals. In the second season of this newly created league, Eken was the most successful goalscorer of his team with his nine goals in 15 games, with his team ending the season in 3rd place in the table. For the summer, Galatasaray signed another player, Kadri Aytaç, for the offensive division of the team. This young player convinced immediately and became the most successful player of his team with his eleven goals in 16 games. Aytaç and Ali Beratlıgil also pushed Eken off the offensive. Since Galatasaray wanted to rejuvenate its team at the end of the season, some seasoned professionals were put on the sales list. The two Eken brothers Bülent and Reha were among these games. While the press was only speculating on a change to rehab at Kasımpaşa Istanbul , he decided to switch to Emniyet SK . At this club he became a top performer right away and with seven goals and 18 league appearances became both the most successful goalscorer of his team and the player with the most appearances. He was also named team captain at the start of the season. Although he had a good debut at this club, he fell out with the club's management. As a result, he was suspended in September 1955 for lack of team training and then left this club a little later. Later he did not continue his football playing career.

National team

Eken played a total of four times for the Turkish national team . He received his first national team nomination in 1948 from the then Turkish national coach, the Hungarian Ignác Molnár . In the friendly match against the Austrian national team on May 30, 1948, he made his country debut. In the same year he received another international nomination, this time from the new national coach Peter Molloy . In the friendly game of November 28, 1948 against the Greek national team , Eken scored both goals for his team's 2-1 victory.

Eken's next international match came two years later. Here he played in the friendly against the Iranian national team and contributed three goals to the 6-1 victory of his team. Five months later, he played his last international match in the friendly against the Israeli national team . In the game that ended in a 5-1 defeat, Eken scored his team's only goal.

With six goals in four internationals, Eken has a goal / game ratio of 1.5. According to the list of Turkish national soccer players, he has the best goal / game ratio of all Turkish national players.

Functional and coaching career

After the departure of Emniyet SK , Eken worked in Izmir as director of the local racecourse from winter 1956 . About half a year later it was announced that Eken would take over the coaching position at Eyüpspor in İstanbul İkinci Küme (German: Second Istanbul League ) . A little later this change did not take place, so that Eken continued to work as director of the racecourse in Izmir and was acted as a trainer at Karşıyaka SK . A little later, Eken took over the coaching position at Karşıyaka and continued his work as director of the racecourse. He looked after this club until June 1958 and was then dismissed.

After his work at Karşıyaka, he took over the city rivals Göztepe Izmir and finished with this the season in 4th place in the table.

In the early 1960s he returned to Istanbul and tried to work as a sports official at Galatasaray. From 1965 he worked as a club official during Suphi Batur's presidency and took care of, among other things, the processing of player transfers. After two years in this position, he announced his resignation as a transfer officer in the summer of 1966 and continued to work as a club official.
