Elvir Baljić , Turkish Elvir Baliç (born July 8, 1974 in Sarajevo , then SFR Yugoslavia , now Bosnia-Herzegovina ), is a former Bosnian-Herzegovinian national football player and former assistant coach of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian national team . In addition to Bosnian citizenship, he also has Turkish citizenship.
Player career
society
The 1.86-meter-tall winger started playing football in his hometown of Sarajevo , from where he moved to Bursaspor , Turkey. Elvir Baljić came to the Turkish top club Fenerbahçe Istanbul in 1998 for just under 9.5 million euros via the Turkish first division club, where he was able to show the high point of his career that had been running until then.
As a result of his excellent performance, he was bought by Real Madrid in the summer of 1999 for 3.5 billion Spanish pesetas , the equivalent of around 21 million euros . Due to a torn cruciate ligament, however, he was rarely able to prevail in the first team and thus returned to Fenerbahçe Istanbul, but only on loan.
In the summer of 2002 Elvir Baljić was given free transfer to Galatasaray Istanbul before he was previously loaned to the Spanish first division club, Rayo Vallecano .
With Galatasaray he was in the 2002/03 Turkish runner-up.
In the 2004/05 season, Baljić moved to Konyaspor and, shocking for all Konyaspor fans, ended his career at the age of 31 in the winter break. Although he had ended his career, he was persuaded on the one hand by the board of the Bosnian national team and on the other by Konyaspor to work as a professional for at least another one or two years. He then signed a one-year contract with MKE Ankaragücü in 2006 and thus remained with the national team.
However, he could no longer build on his old achievements and left the club prematurely. In 2006 he signed a contract with İstanbulspor in the TFF 1. Lig until 2008 and thus ended his career.
National team
Baljić was a player in the Bosnian-Herzegovinian national football team . He has played a total of 38 games for Bosnia and scored 14 goals. In the only game in his home country to date against the German national football team on October 11, 2002 in Sarajevo, Baljić scored the 1-0 opening goal in the 21st minute. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Coaching career
In 2010 he was appointed assistant coach of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian national soccer team.
In October 2015 he took over the Turkish second division club Kardemir Karabükspor as head coach and thus worked in this position for the first time. After nine match days, he resigned from his position.
Others
Baljić's trademark is a white or blue sweatband that he wears to every game. In addition, Baljić is a passionate singer. He also released his first album in 2006 under the name Novi dan (in German: A New Day).
In addition to Bosnian, Baljić speaks fluent Turkish and has both Bosnian and Turkish citizenship.
