Mehmet Polat (born June 8, 1978 in Gaziantep ) is a former Turkish football player and today's coach .

Player career

Mehmet Polat began his career in his home country at Gaskispor . There he was under contract for two years and was loaned to Gaziantep BB for one season during that time . Before the start of the 1998/99 season he was committed by the first division club Gaziantepspor and after a short time awarded to Kardemir Karabükspor . After his return, Polat was one of the regular players in the defense. In the 2002/03 season he was loaned from the reigning champions Galatasaray Istanbul . He played 13 league games and scored one goal. He also played his first and only UEFA Champions League game that season . On October 23, 2002 Polat was in the starting eleven against Club Brugge and was substituted at the second half.

Galatasaray Istanbul did not pull the purchase option and Mehmet Polat went back to Gaziantepspor. For Gaziantepspor he played until the second half of the 2004/05 season. This was followed by engagements at Çaykur Rizespor , Samsunspor , Gençlerbirliği Ankara , Bucaspor and Mersin İdman Yurdu . With Bucaspor and Mersin Idman Yurdu, he rose from the 2nd division to the Süper Lig .

National team

Mehmet Polat made his debut for Turkey on November 15, 2000 in a friendly against France. In total, he came to four international matches. He was not nominated for the squad for the 2002 World Cup .

Coaching career

In November 2013 he was appointed assistant coach at Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor and assisted his former teammate Hasan Özer . After the head coach post became vacant at this club at the end of February 2014, he took over this post together with his former teammate Bülent Bölükbaşı . At the end of the season he handed over his office to Nurullah Sağlam .

In February 2016, Polat signed with Boluspor and assisted Fatih Tekke as assistant coach. After three months, both left the club and joined Manisaspor in October 2017 . Here too, the contract was terminated by mutual agreement after three months.

For the second half of the 2017/18 season, both coaches signed a contract with Denizlispor until the end of the season in February 2018 .
