Heinz Graffunder (born December 23, 1926 in Berlin ; † December 9, 1994 there ) was a German architect .

Life

Graffunder graduated from school with a secondary school diploma in view of the Second World War , then he had to serve in the Wehrmacht for two and a half years . He became a prisoner of war and was only able to start an apprenticeship as a bricklayer afterwards . From 1949 to 1952 Graffunder studied architecture in the United Building Schools of Greater Berlin . He then worked from 1952 to 1967 as an architect, urban planner and department manager in VEB Bauprojektbetreuung Groß-Berlin and its successor companies VEB Projektierung Berlin, VEB Hochbau II and VEB Berlin-Projekt.

During this time, the following work was carried out by him:

From 1967 to 1972, Heinz Graffunder worked as a department head in the VEB Projektierung of the state-owned housing combination in Berlin . Here, together with Dietmar Kuntzsch, he was significantly involved in the planning of the Berlin Liebknechtstrasse and Rathausstrasse (Rathauspassagen) and from 1970 as a complex architect for the Fennpfuhl residential area .

The Palace of the Republic (1976)

From 1972 to 1973 he was chief architect at the Institute for Residential and Social Buildings of the Building Academy of the GDR and then head of the design collective and chief architect of the Palace of the Republic . The Graffunder collective had designed a double-use building for the huge area of the demolished city palace, choosing a separate light color for each floor, which should radiate cheerfulness and elegance. After the Palace of the Republic was completed, Graffunder worked from 1976 to 1988 as chief architect and head of urban planning for the new Berlin districts of Marzahn and Hellersdorf . After that, he was a professor for design theory at the Bauhochschule Cottbus , 1989, he was due to disability emeritus .

From 1990 until his death in 1994 Graffunder had his own architecture office in Berlin, in which he developed two garden centers, several hotel plans and urban development projects. During this time he was particularly committed to the preservation of the Palace of the Republic, also by developing several proposals for its modification and expansion, which were shown to the public in an exhibition. The designs to place a four-storey building in front of the structure as a copy of the facade of the demolished castle, which should be connected to the palace with glass and steel girders, and thus have formed a new, uniform structure, were considered particularly spectacular. Despite the help of some politicians, the architect was unable to reverse the demolition decision.

He found his final resting place in a Pankow cemetery .
