Career

Born and raised in Westmünsterland, Manfred Bockenfeld learned to play football in the youth team at FC Oeding . He began his career in 1978 in the Oberliga Nordrhein at 1. FC Bocholt , with whom he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1979/80 . After a strong second division season in which he scored 14 goals in 41 appearances as a defender, Bockenfeld moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga in the summer of 1981 . Here he quickly developed into one of the best right-backs in the league under coach Jörg Berger . National coach Jupp Derwall gave him a chance in the national team against Bulgaria in a DFB preparatory game for the 1984 European Football Championship in February 1984 , but this only mission remained in his career. After relegation from the Bundesliga, Bockenfeld moved from Düsseldorf to SV Waldhof Mannheim . But his most successful period began when Otto Rehhagel brought him to Werder Bremen in 1989 . With Bremen he won the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1992 final against AS Monaco and the German championship in 1993 . After several injuries, the 33-year-old Bockenfeld could no longer find a connection to the regular formation and in 1994 moved back to the Regionalliga West to 1. FC Bocholt, where he ended his career in 1997. Manfred Bockenfeld made a total of 336 Bundesliga appearances and scored 34 goals.

Today he works as an independent insurance broker in his home town of Südlohn-Oeding .
