Velotaxi (own marketing notation VELOTAXI) is a brand of BAYK AG, with which an operating model consisting of advertising marketing and bicycle taxes is licensed. In Germany, advertising space on bicycle taxis from the manufacturer BAYK.AG is marketed under the name Velotaxi .
history
Velotaxi was founded in 1997 in Berlin by Ludger Matuszewski to implement a new, environmentally friendly local transport system - financed by the advertising concept behind it. It started with 30 bicycle taxis , modern rickshaws that were developed for the European market. Today around 2500 vehicles are in use worldwide.
The Velotaxi "CityCruiser I" was designed in 1999/2000 by the Berlin office gewerkdesign. From 2002 the CityCruiser I was produced and marketed by Veloform GmbH. From 2004 to 2007, Veloform GmbH further developed the technology and design in collaboration with gewerkdesign. The successor models were the "CityCruiser II" - a cycle rickshaw for passenger transport and the "DeliveryCruiser" - a shorter, more compact delivery or shop version.
In 2009 Veloform GmbH bought Velotaxi GmbH and with it the naming rights to the word mark. In 2011, the marketing of the vehicles and the Velotaxi brand were separated. The brand was taken over in Germany by the Berlin company eco next GmbH and its local cooperation partners.
In 2017, BAYK AG took over production and sales (“Cruiser - Das Velotaxi”) as well as the naming rights to the word mark as part of an asset deal . The chassis are manufactured by the Adestra company in Pilsen. The final assembly of the vehicles takes place in the BAYK AG factory in Pielenhofen.
The brand representation VELOTAXI by eco next GmbH was officially ended in 2020. The Velotaxi brand is now being marketed by the brand owner, BAYK AG, together with brand partners at the individual locations.
To date, the concept has been implemented in 52 countries and over 120 cities worldwide, often under a different name.
