Wolf-Rüdiger Umbach (born August 7, 1945 ) is a German mathematician and former president of the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences and a former referee in the Bundesliga .

Life

After graduating from high school in Wolfenbüttel in 1965 , he studied mathematics at the TU Braunschweig and the University at Buffalo until 1970 . The doctorate to Dr. rer. nat. took place in 1971 at the Technical University of Braunschweig. In addition to his work as a research assistant from 1971 to 1974, he was a lecturer at the Braunschweig / Wolfenbüttel University of Applied Sciences (today Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences). In 1974 Umbach received a professorship for mathematics at the Braunschweig / Wolfenbüttel University of Applied Sciences. Umbach later also taught the subject of air conditioning. From 1983 to 1989 he was Dean of the Department of Supply Technology and from 1989 to 1995 Rector of the University of Applied Sciences.

In 1995 Umbach was elected President of the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences. In 2012 his term of office was renewed for a period beginning September 1, 2013. On May 29, 2013, however, Umbach surprisingly announced his resignation on August 31. Umbach was also confirmed as a member of the board of the Lower Saxony State University Conference for another term of office.

Sport and hobby

Umbach has been President of the Lower Saxony Sports Association since 1996. Before that he was a soccer referee. From 1980 to 1991 he whistled as a referee in German professional football, including 80 games in the 1st Bundesliga. In 1991 he received the fair play prize for his behavior in the game 1. FC Kaiserslautern against SG Wattenscheid 09 when a lighter thrown by a spectator hit him on the temple and he lay unconscious on the ground for a minute. Contrary to the DFB order , however, he continued the game afterwards. He was the first Bundesliga referee to lead a league game in the GDR Oberliga (on September 15, 1990 in Dresden).

Honors

In 2005 Umbach received the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit.
