Michael Schröder (born November 10, 1959 in Hamburg ) is a former German professional footballer .

Career

Defender Schröder came to professional football from the amateurs of Hamburger SV in 1980 and was part of the successful Hamburg team in the early 1980s, which culminated in 1983 when it won the European Cup .

In the first three years as a licensed player - the first two of them as a contract amateur - he was hardly used. In the fourth year (1983/84), however, he made his final breakthrough as a professional footballer. From then on, Schröder was part of the regular line-up of Hamburger SV, where he made 118 appearances between 1980 and 1986 - including 90 Bundesliga games - in which he scored 19 goals. He was appointed to the German national team for the European Championship qualifier in Portugal in 1985, but was not used. He made seven international matches for the German U-21 national team .

In the 1983 World Cup final against Gremio Porto Alegre in Tokyo, he equalized the 1-1 draw in HSV's 2-1 defeat. He played once in the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1983/84 and seven times in the 1989/90 UEFA Cup .

In 1986 Schröder moved to VfB Stuttgart , for which he played for three years. There he was used in 72 games in which he scored four goals. He also came for Stuttgart in the 1988/89 season to eleven inserts in the UEFA Cup , in which he scored one goal. In 1989 he returned to Hamburger SV. However, he could not build on old achievements there. He came in two seasons on 28 missions in which he no longer scored a goal. After playing only twice in his last season, he left the club and the Bundesliga in 1991 and switched to Tennis Borussia Berlin , with whom he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1993. With Tennis Borussia Berlin, Schröder played one year in the 2nd division in the 1993/94 season . He came there to 21 missions and two goals. Most recently, Schröder played in the regional league for VfL 93 Hamburg .

From 1996 to 1998 Schröder coached the Hamburg club SV Lurup . Later he coached the A-youth of Hamburger SV and worked as a scout for the club. Since Bastian Reinhardt's resignation at the beginning of 2013, he has also taken on his duties as junior coordinator.
