Jürgen "Joschi" Groh (born July 17, 1956 in Heppenheim ) is a former German football player .

Career

In the club

He began his sporting career as a child at Starkenburgia Heppenheim . At the age of 18 he moved to VfR Bürstadt , with whom he became German amateur champion in 1975. His professional career began in 1976 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern . In 1980 he moved to Hamburger SV . Here he was a constant in the game system of trainer Ernst Happel . He won two German championships with HSV, reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1982 , which his team lost to IFK Gothenburg , and in 1983 won the European Cup final against Juventus Turin . In 1985 Groh moved to Turkey for six months and was the first German player to play at Trabzonspor . He then returned to Germany and rejoined 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He played there until 1989 and ended his professional career. He ended his career at SV Edenkoben .

The 1.81 m tall defender made 351 Bundesliga appearances (197 for 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 154 for Hamburger SV), in which he scored a total of seven goals.

National teams

Groh completed two A , nine B international games and 14 games for the Olympic team . He played his first international A match on May 26, 1979 in a 3-1 match against Iceland on the starting line-up. This friendly match was his last international match for four years. Through his performances at Hamburger SV, he offered himself again to national coach Jupp Derwall and so he came on September 7, 1983 against Hungary for his second and last A international match. The game ended 1-1.

After retirement

After his career, Groh worked as a postman in his native Heppenheim and in Landstuhl (Palatinate). Even before his professional career, he worked as a postman. He lives in the south of Germany.
