Vicuses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vizekusen , English Neverkusen ("Niemalskusen"), is a common mockery of the German soccer company Bayer 04 Leverkusen in soccer jargon and sports journalism . It was created around the year 2000, when Bayer Leverkusen established itself as a top team, but never more than came second in numerous national and international competitions after 1993; the second place is colloquially often referred to as “vice-”. The parent company of the association, Bayer AG , has registered the term, which has also been used self-deprecatingly, as a registered trademark alongside others .

Emergence

Before the 34th matchday of the 1999/2000 Bundesliga season, Leverkusen had three points ahead of FC Bayern Munich and missed u. a. by an own goal by Michael Ballack against newly promoted SpVgg Unterhaching, the championship that was believed to be safe. This game from May 20, 2000 is generally referred to as the beginning of the “Vizekusen” myth . In its newsreel in May 2012, the German Football Association (DFB) named May 15, 2002, the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League final , the hour of birth of “Vizekusen”.

The multiple finals without a title of the club in the 2001/02 season also contributed to the establishment. Bayer Leverkusen is one of six German teams, alongside FC Bayern Munich , Borussia Dortmund , Hamburger SV , Borussia Mönchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt , that have so far reached the final of the Champions League and the European Cup .

Leverkusen managed to play for first place in all three competitions ( Bundesliga , DFB-Pokal and Champions League ) in the 2001/02 season, but were the first German team to come in second. The team then got into considerable turbulence and had to fight against relegation in the following season. Ballack was assumed, as the epitome of the eternal runner-up, to regularly fail at important games, especially at international level.

Ballack lost next to Bernd Schneider , Carsten Ramelow , Oliver Neuville and Hans Jörg Butt also with the German national team at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea the final against Brazil ; these players won their fourth runner-up title of the season, only Lúcio escaped the four-fold second place by winning the World Cup final.

Delegated Use

The term was repeatedly to be found in the national press and was also used by other associations for similar phenomena. In 2012, in connection with the second place in the Champions League, championship and DFB Cup of FC Bayern Munich, there was talk of a year of missed opportunities in the history of the Munich club. The press repeatedly came up with the term Vizekusen Syndrome or in echoes of Web 2.0 Vizekusen 2.0 . Due to the difficulties of the Leverkusen team after the lost finals, Bayern was talking about a vice kusen stigma that should be removed as quickly as possible. The kicker sports magazine , however, saw the attribute as positive. The league competitor was assumed to want to unsettle Leverkusen with the ridicule.

In 2010, the Süddeutsche Zeitung spoke of invincible barracks when Bayer left the field unbeaten 24 times in a row but still failed to win the championship.

In the run-up to the EM 2012 , there were also fears that Vizekusen- or Vice-Bayern Syndrome could spread to the players of the respective club teams in the national team, as in the 2002 World Cup .

Legal Aspects

In 2010, the parent company of the Werkself , Bayer AG, protected the term Vizekusen at the German Patent and Trademark Office in Munich as a brand name in order to “prevent abuse” according to its own statement. The use of property rights, in addition to vice kusen , also for the term pill-maker , is seen as part of a skilful and self-deprecating marketing strategy of Bayer AG. The Meisterkusen , which is also protected , has so far not achieved any success beyond the second placements in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2011.

Further mention

In 2012, Klaus Hoeltzenbein commented on the rise of SpVgg Greuther Fürth under the title When Vizekusen and the lazy giants come as a sign of the rise of lively provincial clubs vis-à-vis the city clubs, which in his opinion overestimate themselves.

The FC Schalke 04 was at the end of the 2000/2001 season of some sports journalists of the friendly sounding title master of my heart awarded. Like Leverkusen, Schalke had missed the championship title in the last game, which was already believed to be safe, on the last matchday, similarly in the seasons 2004/05 and 2006/07 as well as 2009/10. In the entire history of the Bundesliga, Schalke and Leverkusen are the only clubs that have been runner-up more than once without ever being able to become champions. And that with a clear lead over all other clubs: Schalke finished second seven times, Leverkusen five times. However, Schalke was able to become German champions seven times before the Bundesliga was founded.

Leverkusen's unsuccessful attempts to win a title were cited in several English books under the name Neverkusen and compared with a classic tragedy as well as the fate of Sisyphus .
