Robert Steiner (born June 20, 1973 in Finspång , Östergötland County ) is a former Swedish football player . The striker , who made his debut for the Swedish national team in 1997 , played a large part of his career in England.

Career

Steiner started his career at IFK Norrköping . With the traditional club appearing in the Allsvenskan , the striker established himself in the regular formation over time and was one of the top scorers in the league in the 1996 season with twelve goals this season. He aroused interest abroad and from October of that year, the English club Bradford City , which also signed his compatriot Magnus Pehrsson and Norwegian Ole Bjørn Sundgot , loaned him to the second-class First Division . He also moved into the focus of national coach Tommy Svensson and was nominated for the national team at the King's Cup in spring 1997 . In the 2-0 win over Romania on February 8th with goals from Andreas Andersson and Jozo Matovac , he made his first international appearance as a substitute for Joakim Persson . In the course of the tournament he played a total of three games, and in the final - on his last international game - he scored the final 3-1, which meant the tournament victory.

In England, Steiner was able to convince those responsible around coach Chris Kamara of his qualities. After he initially returned to Sweden after his loan period expired in February 1997, the club took him under contract that summer. In the 1997/98 season he was able to implement the trust placed in him and scored ten goals. He was one of the guarantors of relegation along with Edinho , who scored eleven goals, and eight-time goalscorer Robert Blake . In the relegation battle, however, the club had installed Paul Jewell in place of Kamara as a coach. Under his direction, he was no longer used at the beginning of the following season and was awarded from November to the end of the year to the league rivals Queens Park Rangers . Even at the London club, he was not part of the regular staff and was only used as a substitute.

After Steiner's return to Bradford City, Jewell still did not use him, so that he was again on loan for a month with the Queens Park Rangers in March before he was given on loan to FC Walsall in April . In the Second Division he contributed with three goals until the end of the season to achieve a promotion place. Then he took him in the summer of 1999 the Queens Park Rangers for a transfer fee of £ 215,000 under contract. At the London club he established himself as a regular player before he was canceled from mid-January 2000 due to a knee injury. In November of that year he announced his retirement due to this injury.
