Balthasar Smissaert

Balthasar Constantijn Smissaert († 1784 ) was a Dutch diplomat.

He was the son of the officer Jan Carel Smissaert, Lieutenant General of the Infantry and Colonel of the Walloons, and the Anthonia Jacquelina Hesselt van Dinter. He first studied law to become a lawyer, but gave up his studies after a few years in favor of a military career in the Navy, where he became a lieutenant colonel in 20 years. From September 15, 1780 to April 22, 1782 he was envoy to Portugal . Smissaert rejected the protectorate of the Evangelical Church and refused to live in the same house.

One of his daughters stayed in Portugal. She was the mother of the Marquise de Canta Gallo.
