The Gakunan Line ( Japanese 岳南 線 , Gakunan-sen ) is a railway line on the Japanese island of Honshū and the only one operated by the Gakunan Tetsudō railway company . It is a branch line in the urban area of Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture .

description

The Gakunan Line, laid in Cape Gauge (1067 mm), is 9.2 km long, single-track and electrified with 1500 V DC . It serves ten train stations and stops in the eastern, industrial districts of Fuji , with train crossings at five intermediate stops. The maximum speed is limited to 45 km / h. The starting point is Yoshiwara station on the Tōkaidō main line . The route first runs westwards parallel to the Tōkaidō main line, turns north and passes under the high-speed Tōkaidō-Shinkansen line . After about three kilometers it turns east. It crosses under the Tōkaidō Shinkansen a second time and ends in Gakunan-Enoo station.

Trains

Although there is no regular schedule, trains run approximately every 20 to 30 minutes, usually between 6:00 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. The route attracts numerous railway enthusiasts, as the Fuji volcano is visible from all train stations and stops, making it a popular photo subject. A special feature are the “night view trains” that are offered every fourth Saturday evening of the month after sunset. While the interior lighting of the train is switched off, the numerous industrial facilities along the route are illuminated with headlights .

history

The Nissan Corporation opened on August 5, 1936 siding from the railway station Yoshiwara to the nearby industrial zone. The planned further construction did not take place due to the Pacific War and the unused license was acquired in 1948 by the newly founded railway company Gakunan Tetsudō , then a subsidiary of Izuhakone Tetsudō . The new owner built the siding into a full-fledged railway line and extended it to Yoshiwara-honchō on November 18, 1949. On April 18, 1950 the extension to Hon-Yoshiwara followed, on December 20, 1951 to Gakunan-Fujioka and finally on January 20, 1953 to Gakunan-Enoo.

Since June 1, 1957, the Gakunan Tetsudō is owned by Fuji Kyūkō . This company initially planned to continue building in the direction of Numazu , but refrained from this project and let the corresponding license expire. On September 10, 1969, the voltage was increased from 600 V to 1500 V, making it compatible with the Tōkaidō main line. Freight trains ran from February 1, 1984 only to Sudo and on March 17, 2012 Gakunan Tetsudō stopped the freight traffic completely.
