The island of Hatsushima ( Japanese 初 島 ) is located in Sagami Bay , in Shizuoka Prefecture . It is not very large with a diameter of 1.2 km and an area of 44 hectares, but it is the only inhabited island in the prefecture. In 2006, 243 people lived on it. It is about 30 minutes by speedboat from Atami , the closest mainland port to which it belongs administratively. The island is fully developed for tourism. It does not have a sandy beach but you can hike the 4 km around the island on a developed path, as well as diving, fishing, etc.
The supply of the island is problematic, so electricity and water are brought from the Izu peninsula by means of an underground pipe . There is no hospital for the residents; a helicopter has to come in an emergency. There is a school for that.
The island is also home to a branch of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science Technology (JAMSTEC) with a small museum.
