Ōita railway accident
In the railway accident from Oita ( Jap. 大分交通別大線列車埋没事故 , Oita Kotsu betsudaisen ressha maibotsu jiko ) was on 26 October 1961 while Oita one railcar buried under mudslides. 31 people died, 36 were also injured.
the accident
On the Betsudai line of the company Ōita Kōtsū ( 大分 交通 , "Ōita traffic"; today a pure bus company) between the cities of Ōita and Beppu in Ōita prefecture , a tram- like operation with railcars took place until it was closed in 1972 . After heavy rains, a landslide occurred in the area of the route in the direction of Kamegawa station at the exit of the Hotokezaki tunnel ( 仏 崎 , "Buddha cape") on Beppu Bay below the 600 m high Takasakiyama on the city boundary between Ōita and Beppu. A railcar was buried under the mud, which was up to 14 meters high.
consequences
31 schoolchildren died, 34 schoolchildren and 2 Deutsche Bahn employees were also injured. The railway line was shut down after this accident .
