The city of Yurihonjō was created on March 22, 2005 from the merger of the city of Honjō ( 本 荘 市 , -shi ), as well as the communities Yashima ( 矢 島 町 , -machi ), Iwaki ( 岩 城 町 , -machi ), Yuri ( 由 利 町 , - machi ), Nishime ( 西 目 町 , -machi ), Chōkai ( 鳥 海 町 , -machi ), Higashiyuri ( 東 由 利 町 , -machi ) and Ōuchi ( 大 内 町 , -machi ) of Yuri County .
