Yuzawa ( Japanese 湯 沢 市 , -shi ) is a city in the south of Akita Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan . The city lies roughly in the middle of the railway line between Shinjō and Akita, which in turn are the terminus of the Yamagata Shinkansen and the Komachi Shinkansen.
geography
Yuzawa is located southeast of Akita and north of Yamagata in a wide valley at the foot of the Ōu Mountains (奥 羽 山脈), which stretches east of the city. The Omono (雄 物 川) flows through the city. Climatically, Yuzawa is characterized by large temperature differences. Cold, snowy winters (from about mid-November to the end of March) are followed by hot, sometimes humid summer months, especially in July and August. In addition to extensive forest landscapes, the city boasts numerous hot springs (温泉) both within the city and in the surrounding area.
history
The city was founded in 1954 through the merger of the villages of Yuzawa (湯 沢), Benten (弁 天), Hatano (幡 野), Mitsuseki (三 関) and Iwasaki (岩崎). In 2005, the villages of Ogachi (雄 勝), Inakawa (稲 川) and Minasemura (皆 瀬 村) were incorporated.
