In 1945 Vilariño published a small volume of poetry, La suplicante . She is counted to the Generación del 45 . Her nocturnos from 1955 were expanded by her in 1963 and 1986. The Poemas de amor (1957), which was reprinted in several editions , was particularly popular with the reading public . "Of all the great, bold, indomitable poets that Latin America produced, she was the most important."

As a literary scholar, Vilariño published studies of tango texts in 1965 and 1981 .
