The Mama ( Russian Мама ) is a 211 kilometers (with the longer source river Linke Mama 406 kilometers) long left tributary of the Vitim in Eastern Siberia ( Russia , Asia ).

course

Mama arises at a height of 439  m in the northern Baikal highlands in the northeast of Irkutsk Oblast from the source rivers Left Mama (Lewaja Mama) and Right Mama (Prawaja Mama) . Both source rivers arise on the northern flank of the over 2,600 m high Upper Angaragebirge (also Werchneangarsk Mountains , part of the Stanovoi highlands ) in the north of the Republic of Buryatia , the Left Mama at an altitude of around 1720  m , the Right Mama at over 1900  m .

Both source rivers flow through the highlands north of the Upper Angaragebirge in predominantly northern to northeastern directions and reach the Irkutsk Oblast not far from their confluence. The mum retains the northern direction of flow through the gradually lower expectant now upland character carrying mountains in until it finally at the same settlement (and administrative center of the Rajons Mamsko-Tschuiski ) Mama in 207  m leads height in the Vitim.

The main tributaries of the actual Mama are the Kawerga and Konkuderi (also Konkudera) from the right. The most important tributary of the Left Mama is the Maigunda from the left, the Right Mama - the Jalokan from the right.

Hydrography

The catchment area of Mama covers 18,900 square kilometers. Near the mouth, the river is over 200 meters wide and 2 meters deep; the flow velocity here is 2.0 m / s.

Mama freezes from October to May, which is followed by a summer flood that varies greatly depending on the rainfall and lasts until September. The water flow at the Chukcha settlement near the mouth of the river is an annual average of 343 m³ / s with a minimum of 40.6 m³ / s in March and a maximum of 1278 m³ / s in June.

Infrastructure and economy

Mama is 110 kilometers navigable from the confluence of the small left tributary Bramja and the small settlement of the same name to the confluence with the Witim.

The area through which Mama and her source rivers flow in the upper and middle reaches is practically uninhabited. On the lower reaches are several settlements that had their heyday in the middle of the 20th century in connection with mica mining , such as Lugovsky and Slyudyanka (from Russian sljuda for mica ; not to be confused with the town of the same name, Slyudyanka on Lake Baikal ). A road runs through these settlements along the river, which connects the administrative center Mama with the mining settlements around Gorno-Tschuiski and Sogdiondon in the valleys of the Lena tributary Chuja and its tributaries to the west .
