Aughinish Island ( Irish Eachinis , "horse island") is a former island near Foynes in the north of County Limerick , in Ireland on the south bank of the Shannon estuary.

The island in the Shannon, at the Mole can create large ships, one is located alumina -Fabrik the Aughinish Alumina Ltd, which in Askeaton alumina from bauxite produced. Founded in 1983, the company exports aluminum oxide to aluminum smelters for processing into aluminum. Aughinish Alumina Ltd is a subsidiary of United Company RUSAL Plc .

An early origin of Duns is evidenced by the excavations on Aughinish Island. A late Bronze Age chisel of the Dowris type was found here in a dun together with an early Iron Age object. It is therefore possible that the first duns were built during the Dowris phase.
