Of the total of 54 medals donated by the USSR, 36 are of a military nature. All medals listed were donated by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and officially confirmed by ordinance and a description. The only exception is the medal “For impeccable service”, which was donated in three areas of the armed organs only on the basis of a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. All medals donated before 1943 were initially worn on a rectangular clasp with a red ribbon. This changed after the introduction of the pentagonal braces in 1943. These are 50 mm high and 45 mm wide. The associated interim clasps are 24 mm wide and 8 mm high and largely correspond to the ribbon. After the death of the borrower, all medals remained as memories of the bereaved.

Award

According to Section 49 of the Soviet Constitution of 1936, the medals and awards were conferred by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. The general legal provisions for the awards were laid down by decree (last version: July 3, 1979) by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. For each medal there is a decree (Russian: statute) in which the award criteria are listed in detail. The largest museums in the country have a copy of each order.
