The medal "For the protection of the state border of the USSR" ( Russian Медаль "За отличие в охране государственной границы СССР" ) was an award of the former Soviet Union , which was donated on July 13, 1950 in one stage. The medal was awarded to members of the Soviet border guards for selfless and brave work in the event of border violations, for military leadership qualities with regard to the inviolability of the state borders and for merits in the construction and organization of the state border.

The 32 mm diameter silver-plated medal shows on its obverse a hilly landscape, a border post and a border soldier who is holding an RPD in his hands . The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows a border post with Russian coats of arms within two crossed branches, the left of which consists of oak leaves and the right of laurel leaves. This post is partly overlaid by two diagonally crossed weapons in the form of a rifle and a sword. The medal was worn on the left side of the chest of the entrant on a pentagonal green clasp with a red hem. The interim clasp is of the same quality. 67,520 medals were awarded. One received on January 6, 1970, the Minister for State Security Erich Mielke .
