The Ushakov Medal ( Russian Медаль Ушакова ) was a military award of the former Soviet Union , which was donated on March 3, 1944 by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet in one step. It is still awarded today by the Russian Federation.

Award terms

The Ushakov medal serves to honor the merits of members of the Soviet naval fleet (Russian navy). They can be awarded to sailors and soldiers, NCOs and sergeants, mates, masters and ensigns of the naval war fleet and the maritime border troops . Specifically, the medal could be awarded for demonstrated bravery and boldness in combat with enemies at sea. Furthermore, also for the protection of the state sea borders of the USSR (Russia) as well as for the fulfillment of military duties under conditions which had brought danger to one's own life.

Appearance and wearing style

The silver medal is made of non-ferrous metal , has a diameter of 36 mm and shows in the center of its obverse the portrait of the name giver of the medal, the Russian Admiral Fyodor Fyodorovich Ushakov within a 21 mm diameter pearl circle as well as his rank and surname above it Адмирал Ушаков (Admiral Ushakov) whose words are separated by an asterisk. At the bottom of the medal there are two diagonally crossed laurel branches. The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows a raised embossed anchor that protrudes over both the upper and the lower edge of the medal. This means that the upper anchor suspension and the anchor points can also be seen on the obverse. The eyelet of the medal is held in the shape of an anchor and ends in a stylized silver anchor chain in a V-shape to the upper edge of the light blue pentagonal clasp. The hem of the ribbon consists of a 1.5 mm wide dark blue and 2 mm wide white stripe on both sides.

Award numbers

The relatively late foundation of the medal in the spring of 1944 meant that the medal was awarded little and very sparingly during the Great Patriotic War . The first award took place on April 20, 1944 to the ensigns SW Gorochow and WP Stepanenko as well as the staff sergeant VI Shevbunow of the Black Sea Fleet. The first award to members of the Northern Fleet took place on May 26, 1944, to Sergeant Major NW Fadeev. In total, it was awarded more than 13,000 times by the end of the war.
