Medal "For the Liberation of Warsaw"
The medal "For the Liberation of Warsaw" ( Russian Медаль "За освобождение Варшавы" ) was a Soviet award during the Second World War in the course of the Soviet winter offensive in 1945 , which also led to the conquest of Warsaw by the Red Army . It was donated by Josef Stalin in 1945. The award was made to all those members of the Red Army who took part in the liberation of Warsaw from January 14th to 17th, 1945. As of 1995, the medal had been awarded to around 700,000 people.
Appearance and wearing style
The gilded medal shows a Soviet star on its obverse at the lower central edge , from which rays emanate that take up almost the entire surface of the obverse. Above it can be seen a waving banner with the inscription: Варшавы (Warsaw). The approximately semicircular above inscription: За освобождение (For liberation) rounds off the obverse. The reverse bears the three-line inscription: 17 / января / 1945 (January 17, 1945), the date of the occupation of Warsaw. A Soviet star is also shown above.
The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest of the borrower on an elongated pentagonal fabric-covered clasp, the basic color of which is light blue. A red central stripe is woven into this ribbon. The hem is yellow on both sides. The associated interim brace is of the same quality.
