The Nakhimov Medal ( Russian Медаль Нахимова ) was a military award of the former Soviet Union , which was donated on March 3, 1944 by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet in one step.

Award terms

The Nakhimov medal was awarded to honor the merits of members of the Soviet naval fleet . It was possible to award them to sailors and soldiers, mates and non-commissioned officers, masters, sergeants and ensigns of the naval war fleet and the maritime border troops. Specifically, the medal could be awarded for outstanding deeds to protect the fatherland, for active action to successfully fulfill the combat task set . Also for brave behavior in protecting the maritime borders of the USSR and for selfless behavior in fulfilling military duty.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze medal is made of non-ferrous metal , has a diameter of 36 mm and shows in the center of its obverse the portrait of the name giver of the medal, the Russian admiral Pavel Stepanowitsch Nakhimov with a sailor's cap and his overlying rank and surname Адмирал Нахимов (Admiral Nakhimov). At the bottom of the medal there are two diagonally crossed laurel branches. The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows a 13 mm diameter rope circle with the Azov ship of the line , which Nakhimov commanded at the time. Two diagonally crossed and partially concealed anchors protrude below and above it. The symbolism is enclosed by an anchor chain and a pearl circle . The eyelet of the medal is held in the form of an anchor with a blue pentagonal clasp attached to the upper end. In the middle of it, three 3 mm wide white vertical stripes are woven in, which are 2 mm apart. The interim clasp is of the same quality. The medal was worn on the upper left chest of the borrower.

Award numbers

The relatively late foundation of the medal in the spring of 1944 meant that the medal was awarded little and very sparingly during the Great Patriotic War . The first award took place on April 10, 1944 to Sergeant MA Kolossow and the two sailors EW Tolstow and FG Moschkow of the Northern Fleet. The first award to members of the Black Sea Fleet took place on April 20, 1944 to the sailor ND Belik as well as the chief master GI Belikow and the chief officer IF Belkin. Three members of the Baltic fleet, the sailors NG Wawilkin, IS Gawrilow and the Obermeister WA Wassilew, received the medal on June 26, 1944. In total, the medal was awarded 12,800 times by the end of the war. By the beginning of 1981, the number of awards had grown to more than 13,000. By the time the awards stopped in 1991, it had been awarded around 14,000 times.
