The medal "For the defense of the Soviet polar region" ( Russian Медаль "За оборону советского Заполярья" ) was a Soviet award which was given to the participants in the Lapland War . The prerequisite for the award was a period of at least six months in this operational area, calculated from June 22, 1941 to November 1, 1944 or participation in combat operations against the German Wehrmacht between September 20, 1944 and November 1, 1944 times was awarded on December 5, 1944 by Josef Stalin .

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze medal shows on its obverse center a Red Army soldier in winter clothes with machine gun PPSh-41 in his hand. Under the soldiers are two tanks of the type KW-1 , his left one icebreaker displayed two aircraft and the sky. The symbolism is surrounded by the inscription: За оборону совесткого Запoляpья (For the defense of the Soviet polar regions). At the lower middle edge of the medal you can see a waving banner with a Soviet star on it. The reverse shows the three-line inscription: За нашу / советскую / родину (For our Soviet homeland). Above it are the hammer and sickle symbols .

The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest of the borrower on an elongated pentagonal fabric-covered clasp, the basic color of which is ice blue with a white border. A vertical white, turquoise and white central stripe is woven into the middle of the ribbon. The associated interim brace is of the same quality.
