The medal "For distinction in military service" ( Russian Медаль "За отличие в воинской службе" ) was a military award of the former Soviet Union , which was created on October 28, 1974 in two classes. By the spring of 1981, over 3,000 soldiers had been awarded the first class medal and around 25,000 soldiers were awarded the second class. By the time the Soviet Union was dissolved in December 1991, there should be 20,000 and 120,000 borrowers, respectively.

Award terms

The medal of both classes was awarded for outstanding military achievements and services to peace. With it all members of the Soviet Army , the naval navy , the border troops and the internal troops could be honored. Specific prerequisites for the award were excellent performance in political and combat training, in exercises and maneuvers. Also in the military field for bravery, selflessness and other merits during military service. The first award of the first class took place on March 24, 1975 to the soldier WA Spirin, who was honored with this award for his brave behavior in the arrest of armed criminals. Class II was first awarded on February 27, 1975.

Appearance and wearing style

The first class medal is made of brass and has a golden shimmer. The second class, however, consists of nickel silver. Both have the shape of a domed five-pointed star, the spaces between which are filled with five shields. On these are the emblems of the armed forces of the Red Army, Heer-Marine-Luftwaffe and two weapon-specific branches of arms artillery tanks. The distance from jet tip to jet tip is 38 mm. The obverse shows in the middle a medallion with a diameter of 23 mm and shows the left-facing portraits of a soldier (front), a sailor (middle) and an aviator (back). This symbolism is surrounded by a lettering ring with the above semicircular inscription: За отличие в воинской службе (For distinction in military service) and two crossed laurel branches in the lower half of the ring. The lapel of the medal is smooth and empty.

The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest of the borrower on a red rectangular clasp with a border. Two green vertical central stripes are woven into the ribbon on both sides, three millimeters from the edge. In addition, a star in the color of the awarded class is placed in the middle. However, the interim clips are of the same quality and show no differences in the class awarded.
