The interior troops of the USSR , and interior troops of the Interior Ministry of the USSR (original name: Russian Внутренние войска Министерства внутренних дел СССР (ВВ МВД СССР) / Wnutrennie woiska Ministerstwa wnutrennich del SSSR (WW MWD SSSR)), were paramilitary formations to the internal protection of the Soviet Union . The order of the Inner Troops included u. a .:

  • Guarding government institutions
  • Protecting the population from crime, assault and encroachment on their rights
  • Maintaining public order and
  • Guarding prisoner transports
  • Guarding penal and labor camps

From September 1, 1939 to March 21, 1989, the Internal Troops of the USSR belonged to the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union , but were subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior . In fact, they had the status of an independent armed force .

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the Internal Troops of the USSR were given the name Internal Troops of the Russian Federation in 1992 and were restructured according to the changed situation.
